Vermont the "Green Mountain State"
Description: |
Grossular (variety Hessonite) Belvidere Mountain Quarries (Eden Mills Quarries), Vermont, USA Gail and Jim Spann Collection 1.3 x 1.9 x 1.1 cm. Photo: Jeff Scovil
This State has a double honor, to be leaded by one image of the great Jeff Scovil as well as the fact that the image is of a specimen from Gail & Jim Spann Collection! ;-) Thank you so much to Jeff, Gail and Jim. The photo and the specimen deserves to lead this State. |

These are some of the Albites, one with a Hematite rose, from a new locality in Vermont that I mentioned in a column about the Springfield Show, August 2010 ( https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=12908#12908 )
The photos were taken by Joe Budd.

Sorry, those photos are Joe Budds. Jordi was supposed to have added that detail.

I have to apologize to Jordi, he did indicate that Joe Budd took the photos and I missed it. Sorry Jordi!

I collected this piece on a field trip in 1962. This site now has a home on it and the open pit is a backyard pond. Besides the pyrites, we collected small octahedral magnetites, actinolite, ankerite, and mint-green talc that day.

When I was in Middlebury in the 1950's I was more into winter sports than rock collecting, but after grad school in NJ the rocks took a more central interest and I returned to Vermont on a few collecting trips. On one of these trips starting from Ohio in 1969 (intended to be a 5-day trip with my boss starting in the Montreal area and ending in Staten Island in NY), I broke a bone in my foot in the first quarry we entered (St. Eustache). I refused to go back home, wrapped the foot, stuck it into my boot and continued on the trip. After a Mont St. Hilaire open house, we continued to Eden Mills, VT for the most successful trip I have had to that locality which is an excellent one for TNs and miniatures. (pictures below). My foot took about a month to heal to the point where I could walk normally.

The front side of this matrix is covered with needle like crystals of Aragonite. Former collection of Bruce and Dale Wadleigh and now in my collection. Photo credit to Dan Weinrich. Just to try to un-confuse how this is labeled. The Quarry splits across both of the counties with Lowell being in Orleans county and Eden being in Lamoille county. And just to add to the confusion depending on what map level you are using Eden Mills will show as being between the two towns. There is no good way of labeling this one without someone having a different opinion.
