Keith passed away on Wednesday. This is from Collector’s Edge:
We are saddened to report the passing of Keith Proctor yesterday, February 21st 2018 at his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the age of 80. Keith was a legend of the mineral collecting and dealing world for over 40 years, and his endless determination to bring to light some of the world's finest crystallized mineral specimens enriched all our lives as collectors. He is survived by his wife Mauna, their children, and extended family. Our thoughts are with the Proctor family during this difficult time. _________________ Minerals you say? Rest in peace Keith, you brought the concept of "the most important" to the mineral world.

Keith will be missed.
His 1984 article "Gem Pegmatites of Minas Gerais, Brazil: Exploration, Occurrence, and Aquamarine Deposits" is a must-read for all mineral collectors. It can be downloaded free from Gems & Gemology. _________________ John Betts |

Kaith and Mauna brought the most incredible displays in the 1980-1990s and well into this millennia. In my early Tucson years it was always THE most incredible display with primarily gem crystals.
I have many fond memories of Keith at Tucson. One was around 1990 when the Pederneira Mine was little known and Keith was funding a DT crystal with a second smaller crystal at an angle off near the top. These were greenish-blue with red terminations and from the first pocket from where crystals came to the mineral collectors markets,
Keith was sitting on the floor in an Australian mineral dealers both, Martin Rosser, and fondly touching all its faces while licking his mouth. He was sitting there for hours as in a trance. I sure hope he bought it. It was a super nice specimen.
At the time Keith offered me the famous Bullet Aquamarine, the nicest one in his collection.... it was huge money and I was short a few thousand, but he said I could pay half a year later.. but I do not like to owe anyone anything so I did not buy it at the time.
Rest in peace my gem pegmatite friend. I will always finely remember your incredible exhibits. There are at LEAST two more specimens from your collection I would love to buy in the distant future...
I am very VERY pleased with the two I have and glad I could let one of mine go to you!
Our condolences to Mauna and the rest of the Proctor family. |
