We hoped for, and won, the copper in copper vug. And we really enjoyed bidding on, and winning, quite a few others. Your videos of the specimens helped us determine what pieces to really go after, thank you Bryan!

So you were Mr. and Mrs. Blue? and you were the woman the auctioneer thought was bidding for her husband not herself?

So do we know anything about Hoppel yet? Jim Walker has been mysterious about this amazing collector who appears to have operated totally under the radar. I am sure I am not the only one who is dying of curiosity.

John-
Mr. "Hoppel's" identity is known by many, particularly the dealers he bought from. I would have preferred that HA had put up the collection as being from an anonymous collector rather than make up the provenance. Since he wants to remain unknown, I won't "spill the beans". As always the specimens speak for themselves.

I agree, leave it anonymous. But I will certainly add THEIR real name, since his wife might like some distinction there...when I do labels, but not till the three auctions are done. The next is in October. Number 2 of the three.

PostPosted: Oct 18, 2013 11:51    Post subject: Re: Hoppel Collection

Thank you Bob!

The Linarite actually sold for $158,500.

The cool thing about these Heritage Auctions is that they are completely transparent. By this I mean that they have a appraiser put a value to each piece and then they cut that price (sometimes in half) and that's the reserve. Once the auction is finished, they then post the final, winning bid. In this way, EVERYONE gets to see what price the MARKET places on the specimens.

For the last auction, I had a few friends who thought they'd never be able to buy anything but ended up winning a few pieces. Everyone was very happy.

If you're interesting in watching the process, you can sign up for a free Heritage account and watch this weekend's auctions live. It won't cost you a penny and it's pretty entertaining!!!

PostPosted: Oct 18, 2013 15:52    Post subject: Re: Hoppel Collection

thanks for the info Bryan - I was not aware of the auction policies. I'll sign up.

I'm usually adverse to buy specimens without seeing them first hand but these videos make a significant difference. is there a relatively simple way to "size" them of the computer screen so you can make them actual size?

thanks,
bob

PostPosted: Oct 18, 2013 16:09    Post subject: Re: Hoppel Collection

never mind - after registering on the heritage site, I was able to view past auctions and noted that the $158K sales number for this linarite includes the buyer's fee.

bob

was just visiting the heritage web site - is the buyer's premium included in that $158K number? if not, the premium would take the price to about $190K??

thanks,
bob

Dear Gail,

I received my latest Rocks and Minerals today and enjoyed the article that you and Jim wrote about the Heritage Auction in June. I am fortunate that Gwen would not let me go ;-)

The Hoppel Collection has some incredible specimens and it looks like many of them found new homes.

Congratulations.

Sincerely,

Don Lum

We found it was very intriguing and entertaining too, thanks Don. We went to the second auction, it was during the Munich show when people were traveling there, so we found that it was an advantage to us to bid during that time, many pieces came home with us then too. This is a new experience, although we had done some online auctions prior to this, but this was on steroids….
