So do we know anything about Hoppel yet? Jim Walker has been mysterious about this amazing collector who appears to have operated totally under the radar. I am sure I am not the only one who is dying of curiosity.

Mr. "Hoppel's" identity is known by many, particularly the dealers he bought from. I would have preferred that HA had put up the collection as being from an anonymous collector rather than make up the provenance. Since he wants to remain unknown, I won't "spill the beans". As always the specimens speak for themselves.

Excellent videos and that New Mexican linarite must be the world's best?? I heard it sold for something like $150K. does anyone know for sure?

The Linarite actually sold for $158,500.

The cool thing about these Heritage Auctions is that they are completely transparent. By this I mean that they have a appraiser put a value to each piece and then they cut that price (sometimes in half) and that's the reserve. Once the auction is finished, they then post the final, winning bid. In this way, EVERYONE gets to see what price the MARKET places on the specimens.

For the last auction, I had a few friends who thought they'd never be able to buy anything but ended up winning a few pieces. Everyone was very happy.

I'm usually adverse to buy specimens without seeing them first hand but these videos make a significant difference. is there a relatively simple way to "size" them of the computer screen so you can make them actual size?

never mind - after registering on the heritage site, I was able to view past auctions and noted that the $158K sales number for this linarite includes the buyer's fee.

was just visiting the heritage web site - is the buyer's premium included in that $158K number? if not, the premium would take the price to about $190K??

Dear Gail,

I received my latest Rocks and Minerals today and enjoyed the article that you and Jim wrote about the Heritage Auction in June. I am fortunate that Gwen would not let me go ;-)

The Hoppel Collection has some incredible specimens and it looks like many of them found new homes.

We found it was very intriguing and entertaining too, thanks Don. We went to the second auction, it was during the Munich show when people were traveling there, so we found that it was an advantage to us to bid during that time, many pieces came home with us then too. This is a new experience, although we had done some online auctions prior to this, but this was on steroids….
