Last Friday, 14th December, there took place in the Civic Center of La Batlloria (Sant Celoni, 55 km from Barcelona) the inauguration of the exhibition of the Josep Pinós Mineral Collection.
From the early years Mr. Josep Pinós (1919 - 1994) cultivated his interest for the nature. Josep was an out-standing hunter who knew very well those tracks, watering places where a wild boar, a hare or a woodcock were going to pass. All those meals could finish in the family's table or friend's plate. Great mushrooms seeker, expert of the region and good snails seeker, he supplied recognized restaurants (also with Michelin Stars!!!).
This interest for the nature connects directly with his interest for minerals. In the long waits of the wild boar he had been sawing those small bright stones that were under his shoes. From that moment, on his half century age, he turned into a good mineral collector. He collected minerals from the Montseny-Montnegre Mountains (close to Sant Celoni) but also other places from Catalonia. Joined with well-known Catalan mineralogists he investigated new mineral areas. Speciallized in quartz and orthoclase.
He was member of the grup mineralògic català (catalan mineralogical association) and was seller in the MINERALEXPO Sant Celoni Show, where also he exhibited. He was one of the first Best Catalan Mineral awards that is granted in this fair from many years. This awarded specimen is now displayed in the Jordi Povill's Mineral Collection (a great mineral collector from Spain and Europe). You could find more interesting specimens in Jordi Fabre Collection.
Before his death, Mr Pinós decided to donate his collection to the La Batllòria- Sant Celoni Council. Many people, many kids and students, from the area used to visit his collection at Pinós home. He always was giving them some samples.
Now the exposition is open to the visitors and soon will be full time displayed in a permanent Mineral Museum.
