PostPosted: Mar 26, 2012 06:14    Post subject: Introduction

Hi, I wish to introduce myself to all fellow members of this marvelous forum. I live in a small mountainous town in the Western Cape, South Africa. My wife and I are Southern African mineral specimen internet dealers, and have a small mineral shop at home. Quartz and other aesthetic crystal specimens are our favorites. We spend a lot of our time looking for 'hard to find' new deposits of quart crystals, mostly in the Cape mountains. We also visit Northern Cape and Namibia whenever we get the opportunity. When I get some time, I will publish a few of our specimens. Regards!

Hi Jordi,

Thank you. I did read the rules carefully and have no problems abiding to them. Did I transgress any fine print, then I am sorry.

Hi Debbie. Thanks for the welcome. We live in Ceres, which is approximately 100 km from Cape Town. Must be the most beautiful place on earth. I love digging for specimens and can happily do it full time (unfortunately not possible). Regards.

I love Ceres, the best apples I ever had came from there, I spent 3 days there on a mini-break prior to getting married in Noordhoek.

Debbie. The best apples are from Villiersdorp! I like the Postmasburg mica you have posted, not something that you see to often. Nice!

Welcome Pierre (+ wife) :-)

I hope we can see some of minerals from your private collection! Aesthetic minerals such as quartz or fluorite are also my favourites, and i especially love minerals from Namibia, so i hope to see some nice stuff from you :-)

Cheers!
Tobi

Thanks Tobi. I must admit, I am a bit confused as to what a collection really is?! I presume that it is specimens that is not for sale and on display somewhere in well lit cupboards. Well, in that case we do not have a personal collection, even though we have hundreds of kilos of specimens.

HI Pierre and welcome to the forum!!!
I know well South Africa is a sort of paradise for mineralogists and gemologists! Have you got any South-African diamond in your collection? If so, show us please!
Greetings from Italy by Riccardo.

I do believe it is illegal for a South African national to own a raw diamond.

Thank you for the welcome Ricardo! To collect diamonds in SA is problematic (special permits etc.) We just stick to all the rest that glitters! It really sounds like you have an interesting life, visiting quarries all over Europe. The mountains that surround us only have Quartz, Calcite, Gypsum and Mangenite specimens. To dig for other types, we have to travel a bit father afield.

Hi Pierre,

Welcome to FMF. At first look I thought you were either French Canadian of French. Apparently not. Never been in SO, but I know people who traveled and enjoyed their stay.

Hope you'll show us unusual specimens found around where you live and a bit farer as SO mineralogy (put apart rhodo) is not often seen in French shows for instance.

Have fun.

Christophe

Hi Christophe. Thank you for the welcome. I am French alright, but do not ask me to speak French to you. Hundreds of years ago, my ancestors (French Huguenots), fled to SA and Canada. I unfortunately have nothing left of the French traditions or language.
