I spent some days in Rhineland-Palatinate and finished them with a trip to the Deutsches Edelsteinmuseum (German Gemstone Museum) in the famous mining and jewelry city of Idar-Oberstein yesterday. Here are some pictures i took in the museum. Of course my focus was on natural rough minerals and not on faceted stuff. I'm sorry that some of the specimens have no locality info, they were not provided with each piece because the museum's focus is on gems and some of this world-class specimens were "only" there to demonstrate how the gems look when they come from mines.

Hi Tobias!
I can confirm what you wrote here: it is a very beautiful museum for gemstones! I think you know there are two museums dedicated to this kind of stones, one is located in the quarter of Idar and another one in the quarter Oberstein. I think these pictures come from the Idar one. You should know I studied gemology in the German Gemological Association in this town and therefore I know it very well.

Hi Riccardo,
Yes, there are two museums in Idar-Oberstein: The "Museum Idar-Oberstein" and the "Deutsches Edelsteinmuseum", which is shown in this thread. We didn't visit both museums because we had not much time (it was the way home from a journey to the Hunsrück area of Rhineland-Palatinate) and i had my girlfriend with me who is not that much into minerals, so visiting another museum would have been too much for her ;-)
Idar-Oberstein is really a paradise for mineral collectors. You have two museums, dozens of mineral stores and even some gem mines in the mountains around the city. Very nice location!
