The reason Rob Lavinsky was up there during the awards presentation is he gives at least $100 cash to each of the junior age exhibitors. The second highest score gets $300 and the highest junior score gets $500. This was his fourth year he has done this and his biggest complaint to me is we are not giving enough of his money away.
Here are all of the award winners and thank you for asking.
Junior
Gordie Downs – Tucson, Arizona 1st Place and Best Junior
Clay Downs – Tucson, Arizona 2nd Place
Junior-Master
Erica Richardson – Phoenix, Arizona 1st Place and Best Junior-Master

Master
Lauren Megaw – Tucson, Arizona 2nd Place
Gretchen Luepke Bynum – Tucson, Arizona 2nd Place

Toe-nail Tanzanite, Tanzania Paula Presmyk – Gilbert, Arizona
Miniature Corundum, Sri Lanka Robert Thacker – Houston, Texas
Small Cabinet Elbaite on Albite, Brazil Robert Thacker – Houston, Texas
Cabinet Quartz var. Amethyst, Uruguay Robert Thacker - Houston, Texas
Lapidary/Jewelry Faceted Quartz, +/- 750 facets Danny Jones –
Best Arizona specimen Barbara Muntyan - Tucson, Arizona
Special Trophies
Bideaux – For the best Arizona specimen entered in the competition
Steve Maslansky - Prescott, Arizona

Bless you Les, I was so busy snapping photos I didn't write down all the award winner name and why they got the award!
If you see any photos that need a name, or a tweak, let me know?
It was great to see both you and Paula in Tucson, and thanks for all you do.

You are welcome and thank you for all of the hard work you put into taking photos and getting them posted. So, right back at you.
Somewhere in the string of photos and comments is a picture of a brunette you identified as "the nice lady who does the advertising for the show". She is Laura Schauss, wife of Alex Schauss. Alex is the one who won Best in Show and the Desautels Trophy.

Hey, I did run into Tom and Irv at one of the booths at the show. They were really looking for some sleepers.

Les, I couldn't remember, what category did Barb Muntyan win her award in?
Thanks,

Congratulations, Gail!
It's a quite difficult goal to achieve in a time so short. You must be very proud.

Thank you Carles, it makes me proud to see so many people like the content of my show report/photofest.
Many people cannot travel, or afford to travel, and it is a great thing to see what a show is all about. What people wear, how the shows are set up, what the weather is like....
All important to people who might wish to make the trip one day.

To all, in an earlier note I listed the Tucson winners and I just discovered two mistakes. First, I have added Barbara Muntyan to where her award properly belongs. Second, Steve Maslansky won the Bideaux Trophy for the best Arizona specimen. My apologies to both.
Best of Theme
Best Arizona specimen - Barbara Muntyan - Tucson, Arizona
Special Trophies
Bideaux – For the best Arizona specimen entered in the competition
Steve Maslansky - Prescott, Arizona

What are the odds! I was just reading this thread for the third time when i couldn't believe my eyes: On page 1, picture

the man behind Jordi - this is Reinhard Balzer from Marburg, the patron of the Marburg Museum. The museum owes a lot of its inventory to him and his trips around the world. He is gemologist and author of books about minerals from Rio Grande do Sul and amethyst from Uruguay.
A really funny coincidence that you got him on the photo, Gail :-)
